Broken Doll is album no: 4 by Xup (it’s pronounced Zoop!). It was recorded on my return to Manchester after a twelve year absence. It was mainly written on my favourite Fender Mustang bass, in a practice room in the Northern Quarter. The Broken Doll songs got born in a dark place where the only way out was to just keep playing. The spirit of the city drew me back in and held me tight and close. Bright shards of light hiding in the shadows. Shelter and warmth, defying the cold. These contrasts and colours seeped into every note, every wail, every twang and every bang on every song. My favourite songs on the album are The Man In Black, Broken Doll and A Bigger Man. But once the album is out it’s no longer up to me to decide. I hope you like them all.
